Habitat for Humanity Seminole-Apopka

Donation ambassador

May 2021 • Lawrence, MA

What I liked

That the job of driving truck and picking up donations helped go to families in need. I also became a financial intern at the administrative office and I still work there. Its becoming a solid foundation for my future.

What I wish was different

Ahh, nothing to be honest. Originally I was looking for a internship and couldn't find one. Essex County Habitat for Humanity offered me one to help with accounting and ect so it worked out

Advice

Even though at first it may not be something you want , later it might develop into something greater than u thought. Again to reiterate I wasn't planning on being a truck driver but If I didn't do that I wouldn't be in the position I am now without it.

Development Intern

January - May 2020 • Fort Worth, TX

What I liked

The team is incredibly welcoming. The hands-on experience was great and I learned so many things about the field of nonprofits.

What I wish was different

My internship was during the school year so that made the scheduling a bit more challenging than had it been over the summer. I would have preferred to do it over the summer or during a break.

Advice

Be yourself and make the most of your experience. Build connections.

February - March 2020 • Hickory, NC

What I liked

It was great to help this community in a small way and make an impact in the lives of some homeowners. It was also really great to foster relationships with the students I went on this Service and Justice Experience (SJE).

What I wish was different

I wish that we had been able to meet more often before the start of the service trip.

Advice

I would tell students to go on an SJE! I loved this experience and meeting members of the Hickory community. I would tell students to be in the moment and take everything in!

What I liked

-Good work environment. Nice people. -They always have something that needs done -Well known and respected nonprofit -Good experience for someone who wants to help a nonprofit and learn about what working at one is like at the same time -Provides experience that employers prefer, for sociology majors -Memorable connections

What I wish was different

-I would have liked a wider variety of tasks. So far I have been put on data entry, document sorting, and cleaning out the vault full of old files, as well as scanning them, shredding them, and also occasionally mailing letters to program participants. It's not that this work is bad, it's very needed, but I wanted to do a little more "direct" impact stuff. Since this is an ongoing internship, maybe I will before the end of the semester.

Advice

-Having connections helps. I didn't know that the supervisor of our Habitat branch was also the internship coordinator at Drury until I couldn't find an internship. I finally caved and went to her asking for help and she told me she would just make a position for me at Habitat and call that my internship. She saved my college career.
