2020 NY Career Intensive

The Career Center, Kogod School of Business, School of Communication, and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations invite you to participate in the 2020 NY Career Intensive Program from Tuesday, January 7th - Wednesday, January 8th, 2020.

About the Trip:
Designed for career exploration and in-depth networking, the trip offers a select cohort of up to 50 students exposure to career paths and industry trends as well as exclusive access to AU alumni living and working in New York City via two (2) separate tracks. "Track A" will focus on PR & Media Firms, and "Track B" will focus on Marketing & Communications Firms.

Attend in-depth site visits with a range of organizations over the course of the two (2) days and have the opportunity to engage with New York-based alumni at a student-alumni networking event on January 7th.

All participants are responsible for covering the $100 trip fee, making travel and lodging arrangements, as well as for all meals, unless otherwise indicated in the final schedule.

Eligibility Requirements:
·        Sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students interested in pursuing a career in marketing, advertising, public relations, journalism, television, film, or a related field are eligible to participate.
·        Students must be in good academic and judicial standing, and must be a current student in the spring.
·        2.5 GPA or higher (If Handshake states that you do not qualify due to your GPA, be sure to update it in your Handshake profile.) *
·        Submit all required application materials (resume and statement of purpose)

* We will verify your GPA and academic standing via the AU Portal.

** International applicants, disregard the last section in relation to work authorization. International students are still allowed to apply to this program. **


Application Materials:
You MUST submit these two (2) documents for your application to be considered.

1.    Resume
* If Handshake states that you do not qualify due to your GPA, be sure to update it in your Handshake profile.*
2.    Statement of purpose (submit this under the Other Documents tab) in 600 words or less that:

· Lists your name and preferred e-mail address at the top.
· Lists your Track preference(s) and in rank order at the top.
· Gives us an overview of what makes you tick, who you are, and where you're headed.
· Describes what you hope to get out of the program and your career goals.
· Describes what you have to offer that makes you stand out as someone who will make the
most of the experience.
· Is proof-read carefully.

Please note:
Applicants are eligible to apply to both tracks using the same application and materials. However, applicants need to rank their site preferences in the preferred order on the top of their Statement of Purpose.

Applicants may decide to apply only to one track, which should be noted at the top of their Statement of Purpose.

If an applicant does not indicate which track(s) they prefer, the selection committee will decide for the candidate based on the materials submitted.

Applications will be accepted through Handshake beginning October 2nd at 7:00 PM - October 30th at 4:00 PM.

Applications will be reviewed in the order in which they are received and evaluated on the quality of the application materials. Preference will be given to those who demonstrate a career focus and professionalism through the application process. Incomplete or late applications will not be reviewed. Space is limited on the trip, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance in the program.

Students will be notified of their selection by Wednesday, November 13th, 2019.

Acceptance to the program is conditional. There are some milestones that must be met before you can officially enroll. These include:

·        Submit a $100 non-refundable program fee (cash, credit, or debit) using the payment schedule listed below.*
·        Attend the pre-departure orientation for your specific Track.
·        If you wish to be included in the resume book, meet with an SOC or Kogod Office of Career
Engagement - Advisor to review your resume (career advisors are determined by major.)
·        Submit your approved resume by submission deadline.
·        You must be a current student in the spring and must have Clearance of all class registration restrictions and be a student in good standing with AU.

*Financial Assistance may be available if financial challenges exist. Non-refundable program fee is due between November 18-20, 2019. More information will be provided to accepted students.
