Database Co-Op

January - August 2020 • Devens, MA

What I liked

This was an enriching experience. I worked through the pandemic and transitioned to remote work. My 6 month co-op was extended to 8-months. The company was helpful and organized. They are flexible with work schedules and work loads. My manager and team were very helpful but not to the point of micro-management. I felt my project had an impact, and my ideas and suggestions were valued. Compensation was quite generous.

What I wish was different

Obviously I wish that remote work wasn't required but, this had no affect on my co-op as I was able to complete everything from home. This was not the company's fault. I wouldn't have changed anything else.

Advice

I would recommend that new co-ops/interns/employees attend all sponsored events the company has to offer. So many ways to meet people outside of your department that you should take advantage of.

Methods Lifecycle Consultant

July - December 2020 • Devens, MA

What I liked

I liked the people and environment. Everyone was very nice and helpful. The first couple months I was remote but was able to have a month or so to come on site to perform experiments. At my time on campus I was able to see how the site works and I really liked the environment.

What I wish was different

More coops offered in the spring. However, it is understandable that there aren't many lab coops offered in the spring due to COVID.

Advice

Be very open minded in trying new things as you will be introduced to a lot of new experiences.

Biology Research Intern

June - August 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

The people that I was working with were always willing to take time to help me understand. I was able to discuss the mechanism of multiple different drugs and the drug development process with multiple different well qualified scientists and doctors. I learned a lot and was able to shadow both scientists and doctors.

What I wish was different

I wish that there were other interns my age.

Advice

I would definitely recommend this experience to someone who doesn’t know whether they may be more interested in grad school or medical school.

Intern-2nd Year Scientific

June - August 2018 • Summit, NJ

What I liked

The people and atmosphere are really great. Celgene is a great company to work for, and that carries over to the intern program. It is also really rewarding to know that what you do makes a difference in our patients' lives.

What I wish was different

The company has two campuses in Summit,, so sometimes you have to travel between them, which can be annoying.

Advice

Talk to people at the company, if there is something you want to do/try while there, let your manager know, and they will try to make it happen.

I advise people to put in extra work, the people at the company reward and note the effort for the future.

Materials Management and Planning Intern

June 2019 • Summit, NJ

What I liked

I really liked that they had a large intern program across the entire company and across the state, so there were many interns to meet and work with from all over the state and country. Coming in as a freshman, I was very inexperienced with all the technicals that my role required, but everyone was very understanding. It was a great way to truly jumpstart my professional career and I feel that I learned way more than I could have even imagined this past Summer.

What I wish was different

Personally, the only downside for me was the commute: at least 1 hour each way. Other than that, I had no real qualms with the internship and would recommend the employer to other students.

Advice

Make sure to take advantage of the many intern events that Celgene organizes. There are plenty of them, and they are great ways to learn more about what the company does, as well as a great way to make new connections.

Supplier Quality Intern

June - August 2019 • Syracuse, NY

What I liked

I was given a great amount of autonomy, as well as many new learning opportunities. BMS offers many great opportunities for their interns such as tours of the campus and different departments, along with the option to participate in volunteer experiences and different organizations. I was somewhat of an unusual candidate that wasn't studying anything in the STEM field, but a position was open in the Quality Assurance department that aligned with my capabilities. My team was very welcoming and helpful. At the end of my internship we were able to present our summer projects to the rest the employees.

What I wish was different

My cohort of interns was paid through a third party that had some issues, but BMS was made aware of all those problems and is likely to find a new third party payer.

Advice

Take advantage of all the amazing opportunities BMS offers.

Accounting Development Program Intern

June - August 2019 • Princeton, NJ

What I liked

The culture and employees at BMS is what made my experience so enriching. Everyone was so willing to help me with whatever questions I had, and I learned so much because of that.

What I wish was different

I wish I got to spend more time with the company instead of just the summer.

Advice

I would recommend all accounting majors to consider this internship because it is very different than your typical accounting internship. I was put into the treasury department, which allowed me to experience different types of money market funds and other financial tools. Even though I didn't get any experience in audit or tax, I still learned an ample amount.

Downstream Technical Manufacturing Intern

June - August 2019 • Syracuse, NY

What I liked

I worked in an open office made of downstream and upstream teams. I like how both teams not only worked within each other but the two teams worked between each other too. Also, I liked going onto the actual manufacturing floor to see the different steps of the processes being done. The overall atmosphere was welcoming and the people were always willing to help me out if had questions.

What I wish was different

My supervisor was very busy and had a lot on her plate, which I understand, but I was a little bored at times and felt uncomfortable disrupting her and asking for things I could be working on. Also, a planned organized project for the whole summer would have been better than a few smaller random projects.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions, try new things, or explore areas you are unfamiliar with...that is the reason why you are there....to learn

Data Planning

July - December 2018 • Tampa, FL

What I liked

I liked the work culture, the team I worked with, the skills I learned and developed, and the chance to have that experience. The NACC facility in Tampa has all of the latest technology and accessories to make it a very enjoyable place to come to work at. There is even a Bistro that serves breakfast and lunch with a talented chef and crew to feed the entire facility daily.

What I wish was different

Nothing, I have never questioned my role or treatment in the company.

Advice

This is an amazing company to work for. The level of emphasis they place on moral values, upstanding virtues, and workplace ethics is incredible. They highlight their main mission constantly, "Who are YOU working for?" which plainly means you tell yourself that your job ultimately is to help provide beneficial and life saving treatments and medicine for patients around the globe. The main piece of advice I can give is go into this company with an idea of acceptance and compassion for others beyond you.
