Camp Laurel

Camp Counselor

June - August 2023 • Readfield, ME

What I liked

I loved working with motivated, young, hardworking people from all around the world!

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been more prepared for 24/7 childcare. It was extremely challenging and I did not know that was what I was in for.

Advice

I would speak with previous sleep away camp counselors! They are your best resource and know tips to make the good times outweigh the hard times.

Assistant Campus Leader

June - August 2022 • Readfield, ME

What I liked

Camp Laurel is such a beautiful and unique place.

What I wish was different

Due to COVID-19 staff had monitored time-off and we were not allowed to leave camp unless it was a staff-included trip. For my own personal social battery, I would have preferred to have my dictation over my own time off. Again the trips that were planned included the transportation and sometimes the funding of the activity which is great, but sometimes a lot.

Advice

This is the hardest job that you will ever love. Working and living at an overnight summer camp is not for everyone. It involves a lot of patience. Living with a child means you lose some privacy, and sleep and since it is an unplugged camp, at times you lose service. However, the forms and connections you make will be incomparable to others. You learn so much about who you are in a role such as this one. If you go into this role knowing it will be challenging, you will never want to leave.

Sailing Counselor

What I liked

Beautiful location.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more support from the management. That those kids had some sort of discipline or any.

Advice

This is a business, not a camp meant for bettering the kids. Know what you're getting yourself in to.

Apache Specialist

June - August 2019 • Readfield, ME

What I liked

It was fun and offered many benefits such as housing, food, and social activities. It was a great environment to meet people from all over and make lasting connections.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time off. The nature of working at camp means working almost constantly, but when I was off work, I had some of the best days of my life exploring Maine.

Advice

It's okay to get experiences that don't directly relate to your degree plan. As an engineering major I found working at Camp Laurel was one of the best decisions I could have made. It gave me invaluable experience working on a team, improvising and planning, and being a strong leader of a group. All of which are some of the top skills that any employer is looking for.

Camp Counselor

May - September 2018 • Readfield, ME

What I liked

I enjoyed my time as a camp counselor and outdoor tripping guide at camp Laurel because I got to witness and share the first experiences outdoors with children. I was able to teach and share my passion with children of all ages through the outdoors, and that was such a rewarding process. Camp Laurel gives counselors the opportunity to share their expertise in various recreation activities while enjoying the nostalgia of a summer away at camp.

What I wish was different

Advice

I think everyone who has the chance and the summer, should work as a camp counselor. You create so many memories with amazing children and staff that last a lifetime.
