Harlem Children's Zone (NY)

Program Aide

March - June 2023 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked having the autonomy to teach a cirriculum in the class room setting. I had the option to give input and put my own unique teaching style.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more flexibility in scheduling during the summer. It was also understaffed at times making the work difficult to balance especially when managing a classroom of 20 children by yourself.

Advice

Always speak up if you are unhappy and make sure you enjoy working with children before doing this. Be prepared for rough days for low pay.

Development Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

One thing I really liked during my time work with the Development Team at the Harlem Children's Zone was the variety of work I was tasked with. I could not pick two days in my entire summer were remotely identical, and I loved this because I was able to build a multitude of skills.

Teacher’s Aide

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed working with the children, teaching them lessons, and attending trips with them. I loved the impact these kids had on my everyday life.

What I wish was different

I wish I could’ve worked with them longer and see their daily growth.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is that every child is different and you have to be very patient with young children. They are also very smart and curious.
