Horizon Media, Inc.

Brand Strategy Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The culture at Horzion is top tier. There are a lot of resources and benefits in place to ensure that employees are having a great experience. From the beautiful/modern office to the hammocks in the nap room, the game room, and the terraces with breathtaking views of NYC, the experience was great. There is also a great gym and a ton of food options. From a work perspective, the internship was very immersive and I got an opportunity to sit in on meetings and do client-facing work.

What I wish was different

I wish I was placed on accounts that were busier and had more diverse work assignments. At a point, the work got a bit repetitive, so a better variety fo fulfilling tasks would have been welcomed.

Advice

That you don't have to be the most knowledgeable about media to apply. Horizon is appreciative of people who are eager to learn and ready to take on new challenges. Ensure to communicate your personality and work ethic in the interview process and be able to communicate clearly what you want from the experience.

What I liked

I loved that I was assigned a "mentor", who was a Horizon employee that worked outside of the department I was interning with. She was a valuable resource who met with me throughout the course of my time there to help me navigate the building, give me advice, and just chat and catch up over coffee! She also gave me insights on how her department functioned, which gave me a well-rounded understanding of the different intricacies that each department works on and how they work together to complete different jobs.

Digital-Programmatic Buying Intern

What I liked

Horizon prides themselves as one of the best places to work. I came into work everyday loving the projects I was doing, the amenities, and the people that I formed relationships with. The agency truly takes care of their interns and creates a solid media foundation for them. Not only was I coming in to work everyday, but they taught Media 101 and excel classes to prepare their interns for a future in the agency world.

Advice

The interview process was extremely smooth. I had a phone screening and then went onto the second round which was a superday. They offered various roles to apply for, but I would definitely do more research into the various departments in a media agency to guarantee which team you want to work on. I wish more people knew about this program and how amazing of an experience it was.

What I liked

The company culture and internship program is something that cannot be found anywhere else! The culture was extremely collaborative and team oriented. The CEO of the company consistently checked in with us, watched our presentations and knew our names. This something you cannot get in large firms. The motto the company abides by is business is personal. This mission is definitely seen across the company. He made one on one connections with each of interns and was truly a gratifying experience. In addition, the internship program was like no other. We had trips to Google, Facebook, Sony, NBC and more. These intern activities. brought all 30+ of us, together. We also had Media 101 sessions where people from departments would teach us about the importance of each team within Horizon. Lastly, the intern project was applicable to the real-world. My team and I developed a media plan for the History Channel's new show, Knightfall. This 70+ slide and 40 minute presentation was the best project I've been a part of. To work directly with the History Channel and present our findings to the representatives of the actual History Channel team and as well as the CEO of Horizon, was remarkable. I learned so much about media and advertising, despite not being an advertising major. I only had basic marketing experience and I am definitely going to be pursuing this as a minor and possible future career.

What I wish was different

I honestly do not believe anything could be changed. It is rated as one of the best places to work by Craine's list for several years now. The only thing I would change is probably more training on the several tools they use for market research, budget allocation and target building.

Advice

Networking as much as possible with each department. There are so many different departments in advertising so it is important to have a complete understanding of how each one plays a role in serving the client's interests. Also, enjoy every moment of it because this will truly be the best internship experience ever. There is no internship program out there that really values their interns and a detailed program of events, networking opportunities and skill-based workshops.

SEO Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The intern program is fantastic - you get to work on a Media 101 group project and my team always gave me interesting work to keep me busy.

What I wish was different

Pay was competitive for marketing but not for other related fields (I.e. consulting). New York has a high cost of living so that wasn’t easy.

Advice

FANTASTIC sophomore summer internship- you will learn a ton and make great friends!
