WeHaKee Camp for Girls

counselor

June 2021 • Winter, WI

What I liked

Wehakee is an amazing community and I felt welcome right away. Since this job required working with kids almost all day, I really liked the support and help I got from the other staff and admin. The directors work hard to make sure that all the staff members are comfortable in their positions and feel like they can always share any concerns or ask questions.

What I wish was different

There was very little I would want to be different. It would have been nice to experience a "normal" year without the pandemic, but Wehakee honestly adjusted really well.

Advice

Even if it might seem like a big commitment to apply, it's a huge learning experience and life experience and you should definitely give it a chance.

Camp Counselor

June - August 2021 • Winter, WI

What I liked

I absolutely loved working as a counselor at Camp Wehakee in the summer of 2021. I truly had one of the best summers of my life and gained so many skills and experiences while there. I built great relationships with both the campers and other counselors and had such a fun time doing so. Not only do you gain tons of practical skills, you also become such close friends with the other counselors and staff members throughout the summer.

What I wish was different

There are not many things I wish had been different about my experience as a counselor at Wehakee - it was sometimes difficult to make adjustments for the COVID-19 pandemic, but overall, Wehakee adjusted really well and we had a smooth summer with no outbreaks.

Advice

I would really advise anyone who is thinking about working as a counselor to apply to Wehakee. The memories you'll make, both with the campers and other people on staff, as well as the practical experiences you'll gain are unmatched. Wehakee is such a supportive working environment that is so welcoming of people from all walks of life. If you want to have a great summer and learn so much about yourself you should definitely apply to be a Wehakee counselor!

Camp Counselor

July - August 2021 • Winter, WI

What I liked

WeHaKee is such a warm welcoming environment. You will make lifelong friends and meaningful relationships with campers and staff. The activities like waterfront sports, horseback riding, and arts and crafts you will help lead the girls in are so enjoyable. The amazing community and ability to make a difference in young girls' lives are truly invaluable!

What I wish was different

The pandemic definitely placed some barriers on camp, but the Camp administration did a phenomenal job handling it and keeping everyone safe while still maintaining the nature of camp.

Advice

If you are looking to spend your summer making meaningful relationships in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, look no further!

Camp Counselor

May 2015 - August 2019 • Winter, WI

What I liked

WeHaKee is an incredible place to make friends, grow as a person, live in a diverse community, and help young girls learn valuable skills and have a great summer! There are so many activities to teach and participate in and you get to be in small groups settings that really allow you to foster close relationships with campers and other staff. I wouldn’t have had any experience like the ones I’ve had at WeHaKee if I took a different summer job and I without a doubt can say it has helped me with getting other internships and jobs.

What I wish was different

I wish it could have been more than just a couple summers, but I think the short timeframe made me appreciate the time I spent there. Other than that, I wouldn’t change the place for anything. It’s a safe place that follows all of the standards set by the American Camp Association and is staffed by only the most qualified people, including doctors and nurses. If you get sick or hurt, there’s always a doctor or nurse on site to treat you, in addition, their COVID guidelines kept camp in 2021 COVID free! You couldn’t ask for a safer place to spend a summer, even during a pandemic.

Advice

Take a chance on spending a summer in up north Wisconsin at WeHaKee. You won’t regret it. Life long friends and unforgettable memories await!

Camp Counselor

June - August 2021 • Winter, WI

What I liked

There was great flexibility with my end of the school-year schedule. The overall atmosphere and friendliness of the staff is incredible. Bob and Maggie handled navigating the pandemic extremely well.

What I wish was different

Working during the pandemic was a bit of a struggle. It wasn't easy finding alternative solutions to old ways. It would've been nice to have a normal year.

Advice

Communication is key, as it is with any job. Communication with Bob and Maggie as well as with fellow staff is the only way to ensure a smooth summer and understanding between everyone.

Cabin Counselor

June - August 2019 • Winter, WI

What I liked

I got to spend every day out in the sun, teaching kids to waterski and ride horses. That means I got to waterski and ride horses all summer as well!

What I wish was different

This camp didn’t follow all safety regulations even when pointed out to them (safe and non-expired horseback riding helmets for example). Admin staff was not always very helpful.

Advice

If there’s something you want to try, do it! I was skeptical because the salary for my entire summer was rather low, but the experience was worth it!
